(Romereports.com) The Pope's visit to a Brazilian slum was one of the stops he explicitly, added to the trip's schedule. He was given a warm welcome as he walked into the slums of the Manguinhos Complex. He blessed a parish altar, and he made his way through the slum, greeting and blessing children along the way. He then met with a local family, in private, visiting their humble home.

A group of kids, even gave him a banner of his favorite Argentinian soccer team, 'San Lorenzo.'
The Pope addressed the slum's community thanking it for its hospitality, with a bit of humor.

POPE FRANCIS
“I would have liked to knock on every door, to say 'good morning', to ask for a glass of cold water, to take a cafezinho, to speak as one would to family friends, to listen to each person pouring out his or her heart, parents, children, grandparents.”

That slum is known for a history of drug violence and for its extreme poverty. But referencing the multiplication of bread, he reminded them that when one gives, one also receives.

POPE FRANCIS
“When we are generous in welcoming people and sharing something with them – some food, a place in our homes, our time – not only do we no longer remain poor: we are enriched. I am well aware that when someone needing food knocks at your door, you always find a way of sharing food; as the proverb says, one can always "add more water to the beans!'”

In an open air field, the Pope said that giving bread to the hungry is an act of justice, but he also added they should not ignore their spiritual hunger for God.

When disillusioned with corruption, crime or indifference, the Pope called on the youth, to not be discouraged. The Church, he said, is at their side.

POPE FRANCIS
“To you and to all, I repeat: never yield to discouragement, do not lose trust, do not allow your hope to be extinguished. Situations can change, people can change. Be the first to seek to bring good, do not grow accustomed to evil, but defeat it."

In his speech, the Pope called for the protection of life, the family, education, and health.
